Interview Do’s and Don’ts

 

Things to remember

  • Do your research not the company and your position
  • Practice interview questions with friends and family 
  • Dress appropriately, a bit more formal than the company’s dress code
  • Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early 
  • Be polite and courteous
  • Bring 2 to 3 copies of your resume and references 
  • Firm handshakes( Shake hands at the beginning and at the end of the interview)
  • Wait to be seated or invited to sit 
  • Take off your coat /jacket and ask where to place items 
  • Maintain good eye contact and remember to smile 
  • Keep answers concise , clear, and positive (Stop, think and answer)
  • Project your voice-it shows your level of confidence 
  • Ask for clarification if you do not understand the question 
  • Show enthusiasm and interest 
  • Keep table surface clear of any obstructions 
  • Ask for a business card and send a thank you letter
  • Conduct a follow up 
  • Have a good night’s sleep, relax, and Believe in yourself!

Things to avoid 

  • Do not lie
  • Do not memorize your answers 
  • Avoid chewing gum, eating or smoking before/during the interview 
  • Avoid repeating answers, rambling, or interrupting the interviewer 
  • Avoid one or two word answers(e.g. “yes””no””umm””I don’t know”
  • Avoid fidgeting (swinging in your chair, excessive hand movements, tapping your foot,etc.)
  • Do not talk about personal information(e.g. marriage, health conditions, children, age)
  • Do not swear or use inappropriate language or slang
  • Avoid talking negatively about previous/current colleagues, boss, or management team
  • Avoid looking bored or uninterested during the interview
